Days before war was declared, the National Gallery closed its doors to the public and secretly evacuated the paintings. The collection was initially hidden in selected country houses, but later relocated for permanent storage in the cavernous chambers of a disused quarry, deep in the Welsh mountains.| |Back in Trafalgar Square, the gallery - now empty - stayed open to house a popular series of music concerts fronted by internationally acclaimed pianist, Myra Hess.
